Aram is a wearied accountant with an unbearably dull existence. With a nagging wife who berates him for not being assertive enough, and a measly paycheck, he quietly suffers while awaiting a long-deserved promotion. But there's more to Aram than his mild-mannered demeanor lets on: he has been secretly devising a scheme to finally get what he feels he is owed. One day he asserts his power menacingly when he kidnaps a schoolgirl and keeps her tied up in an abandoned warehouse. Scherzo Diabolico delivers on giving the audience a crazy ride, but unfortunately it continues too long after an otherwise perfect ending. From the very beginning of Scherzo Diabolico you’ll sense that it has somewhat of an alternative narrative. Don’t worry though, this is a good thing.
I was looking for something a little different from my standard horror fare this evening, and I certainly found it in Scherzo Diabolico, a twisted little thriller from Mexico that starts off intriguingly, gets progressively darker along the way, and closes in a manner that is satisfyingly raw and shocking.
“Scherzo Diabolico” plays with the notion of “monster.” Aram is not an obvious monster, but one who observes, seethes, plans methodically, and finally puts in motion his devious plot. Perhaps his seeming normality is his most frightening aspect.
